U.S. Commerce Department: Housing Starts for Northeast Increase Significantly from December
  

Privately-owned housing starts in January were at a seasonally adjusted rate of 78,000 for the Northeast, up 41.8 percent from the revised December total of 55,000, according to data released by the U.S. Commerce Department.

 

Nationally, housing starts were at an annual rate of 596,000, a 14.6-percent increase from the revised December total of 520,000.

Building permits for the Northeast in January fell 38.5 percent to 72,000 from the December rate of 117,000. Nationally, building permits fell 10.4 percent to 562,000.
